Week–End Glory, Maya Angelou:
My life ain't heaven
but it sure ain't hell.
I'm not on top
but I call it swell
if I'm able to work
and get paid right
and have the luck to be Black
on a Saturday night.
Something extraordinary has come from the Black experience in America. We call it Soul!
It shows up in the way Billie Holiday sang her song.
We acknowledge it as Langston Hughes'
writing is described
as jazz poetry
and Gregory Hines'
dancing as poetry
in motion.
Gospel is soul through and through.
Soul is something special! Here’s a news flash:
Admission is FREE and open to the public!
We will be celebrating Minnesota Soul in all its forms. Come out to be lifted by the best African American artists in the state and to lift others as we celebrate community!

Stairstep Foundation began in 1992 as a response to a set of crises/challenges that confronted African Americans. The Stairstep mission is to reignite and sustain a spirit of community among African Americans. Our quest for wellness requires that we confront the violence perpetrated on and within our community as a presenting issue, while we aggressively engage the root issues that rob our long-term peace.
